1301 – The Marquis, the long-awaited first story in The 13th Floor Series from Christine Rains has just been released. I’m so excited to see this story launched. The premise of the series is fantastic, and this first instalment kicks off with a huge bang. Christine is here to chat about the demon in her story 1301 – The Marquis.
Over to you Christine:
DEMONS
Sexy and sinful, demons are popular in paranormal romance. The seemingly irredeemable beings that find salvation through love. They’re one of my favorite kinds of supernatural creatures to write and read about. The possibility for so many stories lie in the fertile grounds of legends and myths.
The demons in The Marquis are the biblical type. They are fallen angels who serve Lucifer and are damned for all eternity. At least that’s what they believe.
My hero Marc was once The Grand Marquis, or Marchosias (in Christian theology). He was a great fighter and commanded thirty legions of demons. He hoped to return to Heaven after 1200 years of service, but he was deceived. Knowing he’ll never find absolution and having no delight in the torments of Hell, Marc retired and now lives as a human. Or, at least, he tries to do so.
The villain of my story isn’t as infamous as the Marquis, but he’s determined to make a bigger name for himself. Vetis is a mid-level demon of corruption. Not much is known about him, but he’s more popular in tales of possession than any other. With modern day technology, Vetis finds tempting people too easy and wants something more of a challenge. When Marc steps in to save a friend from falling into temptation, Vetis sees his chance. There’s nothing more fun than tormenting a former comrade and then chopping off his head to bring back to Hell as a trophy.
Vetis commands minor demons and uses them to wreak chaos in Marc’s city. These wee creatures might be small, but they can create a lot of trouble. One imp might be only a pest for Marc, but they can join together and fuse to form much larger constructs. No particular demon legend inspired me here. Perhaps the construct is more Voltron inspired!
I’ve no doubt that demons will continue to be best sellers in this genre. Readers love stories about dark and tainted beings that find a second chance at a good life through love. It’s about hope and redemption, and sizzling hot demons.

Title: 1301 – The Marquis
Author: Christine Rains
Genre: paranormal romance
Release date: December 13th, 2012
Blurb:
Life after Hell isn’t more exciting than watching football and fixing a busted pipe. Once a powerful demon, Marc enjoys his quiet existence and a good cup of coffee. With big ambitions to gain his master’s favor, a trickster demon named Vetis shatters Marc’s peace and vows to deliver Marc’s head to the fires of Hell. Not before he destroys everything Marc cares about, of course.
Marc’s power has diminished over the years. Heaven will never grant him absolution, and he refuses to return to Hell. Running isn’t an option. The city of Carmine is his territory. It’s also home to his favorite cafe owner, Mae Hopkins. The dame has a lovely smile, but it’s her heart and soul that shine bright.
While his city burns and his love is captured, Marc must decide to surrender or let hate and anger fuel him to become the fearsome beast he so loathes: The Marquis. If the Marquis rises, Vetis can be defeated and Mae saved, but Marc would be lost to his demon forever.
