It’s been one year since I kicked off the Monday Mythology meme. And it was about time these mythological creatures finally gained their own, dedicated page on my blog. So, I’m introducing a new tab titled ‘Mythology’ along the top of this page, or click here to go there.

Rather than list the creatures at the base of each mythological blog, I’ll now be adding them to the Mythology page, meaning it will be easier to find information on any mythological creature I’ve researched.

I hope you find it easy to navigate through.

Krampus – God Of Winter Death

You know that old saying where being naughty means you’ll get coal or a stick in your stocking at Christmas… or maybe that’s what I heard growing up. Well I’m thinking this may be linked to the Krampus, who is quick to punish those kids who have misbehaved during the year. Watch out little kiddies, if this guy visits your home run away.

Salamander – Fire Lizard

Mythical Creatures Series

It is said that some early visitors to China were once shown a cloth made from salamander wool, which was unharmed by fire if thrown on a blaze. The Pope Alexander III apparently had a tunic which made of it, which he valued highly. Though it seems some reports show these garments were perhaps woven from strands of asbestos!!!

Dryads are female spirits of nature who live in individual trees, unseen by humans unless they want to be seen. Be cautious of what trees you chop or harm, for if a dryad lives in one, prepare to face the wrath of a Greek god.

Shedu – Benevolent Protector

Mythical Creatures Series

The large figure of the winged bull, Shedu, can be seen in many Assyrian sculptures. Considered guardians and protectors to people’s homes, Shedu are usually found at the entry of temples, palaces and other great buildings. It was also common to find carved images of the Shedu on tablets placed under or on the front door of a house for extra protection.

Cockatrice – The Death Eye

An egg laying rooster!! If that in itself isn’t an impossibility, when this rooster abandones it’s eggs, it is said a snake or toad takes over the job and what is born is a cockatrice. The inconsequential fact that this creature is half a rooster and half a snake or dragon is nothing compared to its potent abilities.
