One of my all time favorite movies is Shaun of the Dead, in particular the scene where all the characters mimic zombies to cross a street plagued with the undead – for the sole purpose of reaching the Winchester Pub. I giggle each time I visualize the scene. So that got me thinking.
Every Friday is pub lunch at work, and a few months ago while sitting in one of the oldest pubs in the eastern suburbs; I asked a colleague, “What would you do if this pub was surrounded by zombies?”
My colleague gave the question serious thought, and after rubbing his chin for a good minute, he said, “Easy, I’d run to the roof and climb into a helicopter.”
I was quick to remind him that this was real life, and a helicopter would not just happen to be waiting for him on the roof of the hotel. He needed a more sound escape.
He said, “Then, I’d run upstairs and block the stairwell so the zombies couldn’t follow me. While the zombies staggered into the building, I’d climb onto the roof, and then jump across to the next building’s roof. From there I would slide down the drain pipe and run away, safely.”
Not wanting to dampen his idea with the notion that there would be more zombies beyond the pub, I said nothing more on his idea, and let him believe his plan was sound. My idea had me hiding upstairs, with the stairs blocked until the zombies went away, and this was quickly shot down by my colleague.
This has now turned into a ritual, so whenever someone new comes with us to the ‘Zombie Pub’, as we’ve now named it, they need to answer that one simple question.
Yes, most of the time, my mind does live in a parallel universe filled with zombies, demons and all the things that live in dark shadows. I use these thoughts to create my stories, bringing to life characters who love nothing better than to take on a challenge.
So, how do you escape? Do you have a work ritual? Share your story.
