Trouble always with messed my life. And as if on cue, the sharp ache in my gut flared. I closed the door behind me, and the hearth’s fire lit the darkened room.
“You’ve killed us.” Radu spoke to a figure in the corner.
A burly man with black eyes and a sardonic smile stepped out from the shadows. “You’ve forgotten your place.” His chest puffed out. “I’m the wulfkin alpha and won’t tolerate insubordination from any pack member.” Blood seeped through the bandages tracing the length of his arm and torso.
The metallic sensation slicked over my tongue, but I shouldn’t have tasted blood from across the room, the full moon was days away. It couldn’t be my inner wolf.
I surveyed the room and my first thought flew to Enre’s absence. My stomach scaled up to my throat. “What’s going on?”
Sandulf’s head jerked in my direction. His bushy eyebrows lowered and his voice hardened. “This doesn’t concern you, Daciana.”
My instincts screamed danger. “Like hell it doesn’t.”
The alpha said nothing, never lifting his gaze off me.
Radu’s silvery eyes met mine for a split-second. Strawberry-blond hair, overgrown stubble and sideburns set him aside from the pack, and as the newest pup to cross over from werewolf to wulfkin, I admired his courage to face the alpha. He turned to Sandulf. “Forgive me.”
Had humans discovered our existence and injured Sandulf, or had another wulfkin pack entered our territory? “What happened?” I asked again.
