Do you ever start a week already chasing your tail, and from the get-go you know it’s going to be one of those weeks? The kind where everything is topsy-turvy, things don’t go how you want them to, and if you dare attempt to seize some kind of control, bang, you’re hit with death lava, melting away your plans. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but at the core, I’m plunging right into such a week.
So, I’m changing tactics. Rather than reveal a new mythological creature as I do every Monday, I’m going to chat about a super-duper novel plotting course I’m participating in over at Savvy Authors, for the month of August.
The course is run by the wonderful Suzanne Johnson, an author of urban fantasy and paranormal romance, and the first book in her Sentinels of New Orleans series is coming out from Tor Books in fall 2012. Her course helps “stitch together a perfect quilt of a plot to keep your novel on track and moving in the right direction.” I just love her comparison of patchwork creations to story plotting.
So in my wisdom, I’ve decided to plot out 5 books. No, that’s not a typo. I’ve had these five story ideas bubbling in my brain for too long, and now I need to give them flight. I am plotting two novels in the course and the other three on my own. The stories will fall into one of the following genres:
– Paranormal Romance
– Dark Fantasy
– Horror / Dark Fantasy
– Dark Mythology (I know it’s not a real genre)
Up until mid last week I’ve been keeping up with the course, polishing my urban fantasy manuscript and writing the synopsis, but once work kidnapped my time, I dropped down to two novels and did nothing else. You see, in the course there are 3 homework assignments per week. While the work is getting harder, it is an awesome program. I can already see my stories take shape, and now I’m excited to start writing them. I’ll just need to decide which one to write first.
Rather than stress that I’m behind on all of my writing projects, I’m going to wing it and see where I end up by this week.
How do you deal with crazy weeks?
