I have come to the conclusion that a large majority of the population have absolutely no clue what a writer does. Yes, of course we write, but that’s not what I’m getting at here. I’m referring to how the general public (by this I mean family and friends) perceive the hours and days we spend locked away alone with our computers. The reason I suspect this is because of the recurring conversations that have continued to pop up in my life, again and again. Each example below has happened several times over!!!
Me: “I’ve re-written my chapter one again. It’s much better now.”
Friend: “Again? Maybe you should stop working on that story.”
Me (thinking): Really? That’s your answer… give up.
Family: “What are you doing today?”
Family: “Writing? Still!”
Me: I roll my eyes, and stop myself from screaming that it takes a long time to write a novel.
Family: “When will I see your book in a bookstore?”
Me: I walk away.
Friend: “What are you writing about?”
Me: “Urban Fantasy”
Friend: Her eyes cross with confusion.
Me: “It’s a paranormal style story with mythical creatures.”
Friend:”Oh like Twilight.”
Me: I cringe and curl into a ball…
Friends / Work Colleagues / Strangers In The Street : “Oh, you’re a writer.”
Then this is followed with one or several of the below:
– What’s your book about?
– When will it come out?
– You might be as big as JK Rowling or Stephenie Meyer
– I’m going to write a book
And I’ve also come to the conclusion that most people have only read or heard of Twilight and Harry Potter!
What about you? Do you ever find yourself cornered with such questions?
