Today is Australia Day, the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland.
It’s a public holiday here today, usually celebrated with friends and family over a BBQ or at the beach. Though the rain hasn’t let up here and everything is wet, I’m certain it won’t dampen the Aussie spirit.
My thoughts go out to those Australians who today are facing weather disasters – the floods and bucketing rain seen in Queensland and northern NSW.
