Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be.
Anyone can play along!
– Grab a book you are reading.
– Open to a random page and pull two sentences.
– Post the book title, author, and page number.
– No spoilers, please.
My quote for this week comes from The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman, pg 143.
“For instant, instead of “brown” eyes, you might call them “almond”; instead of saying “he was a large, healthy man,” you might call him “ursine.” Use comparion. Instead of saying “his eyes were blue,” you could say “His eyes were the color of the tiles beneath this feet.”“
A great book on perfecting the first fives pages in a manuscript, and really the information can be used for the entire novel.
I love a witty character description. Comparisons are my favorite way to go. Thanks!
Is this a picture of the book? Does the cover really look like a manuscript in a rubber band? If it is, that is SO VERY COOL. Sounds like a fabulous book to boot!
Yep, that is the actual cover image… cool isn’t it
Noah Lukeman is like my celebrity writer’s world crush, lol:)
Always good to be as explicit as possible. Great teaser. Thanks for commenting on Alex J. Cavanaugh’s post at Under the Tiki Hut.
Fantastic advice. I should pick up this book. I don’t often read books on the craft, but sometimes there are really good ones out there.
I like the idea of not using the same ol’ words. I don’t have a teaser because I’m in the teacher’s room without my book.
I may need to pick this one up!
Oooh…now to find a way to work ursine into my vocabulary without sounding like an arrogant prick.
Ohhh, I am going to have to pick this book up! I’m slowly gathering books about writing in general in hopes of psyching myself up to write.
Great teaser. I have this book, but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.
Here’s my TT.
Interesting! Sounds like the sort of thing I would definitely pick up if I were writing a novel 🙂
An interesting teaser!

This looks like a great resource!

Oh, I’m a HUGE fan of this book! Glad you like it. I just discovered The 101 Habits of Highly Successful Novelists, which I’m finding very encouraging.
Sounds like a must-read. Thanks for sharing….
Here’s MY TUESDAY MEMES POST
Good advice…but as a reader sometimes the comparisons get to be too much…or the words used in place of brown are too old fashioned to be recognized easily. Sometimes…just saying grey eyes is preferable to say ‘his eyes were as dark and cloudy as a stormy day.” But that might just be me.
My Teaser is from Croak and can be found here.
Good advices and a really good teaser. Thanks for sharing.
My teaser is from The Big Sleep
Great teaser! 🙂
My Tuesday Memes
Great advice! I may just have to pick this one up as I am currently writing my own novel. Thanks for sharing!

ursine—that’s new to me.
Good advice! But don’t think you can follow it all the time!

I’ve read this one. A useful book to have on hand.
Here’s My Teaser
Some good tips, though I do hope the actual editing in this book is better than what is shared here. 😉 My post: A Deadly Cliché
Wow, useful!
Here’s my teaser for the week.
Great teaser! My teaser comes from The Doctor’s Lady.
Sounds like a great help! Here is my tease: Mom Reads My Books
I like this idea!
I happen to be reading a lovely book right now, so I’ll play. The book is ‘Pearl Buck in China’ by Hilary Spurling pg 24 excerpt is:
‘When she wasn’t out walking in the afternoons with Wang Amah or doing morning lessons with her mother, Pearl spent her time at the window, looking down the street or out over the vast expanse of the Yangtse River:
I learned to know its every mood during the hours I spent at the window.’
Seems a shame to stop there, but two sentences it is. I guess that would be a reason to go out and get the book! 😉
I like the teaser.. and you’re right.. I want to keep reading.
