Christine Rains has just released her romance paranormal novella FEARLESS – woohoo – and as part of the launch, she’s holding an awesome blogfest. First, if you haven’t already, go get yourself a copy of Fearless and be prepared to fall in love with it. 🙂
Okay, back to the blogfest. All you need to do is write about your childhood monster. Did you have a beast living under your bed? Or was the scary clown in your closet?
__________
I grew up loving all things horror, and from a young age I remember watching scary movies, dragging my friends over and making them watch gut-clenching tales. So, I didn’t actually have monsters under my bed or closet – don’t ask me why, I just didn’t. But my obsession with horror did carry across and affect others.
– My mum would often dream of scary vampires chasing her. That always made me giggle, but freaked her out.
– I shared a bed with my younger sister when I grew up, since our house wasn’t big. Most nights I’d leap into bed and make her turn off the lights. The moment the lights went out and she scrambled toward the bed, I tucked all the blankets under me and screamed out that a werewolf lay under the bed. She shrieked, waking up the whole house. My poor younger sister today has a fear of being in the woods at night, terrified of werewolves. Yep, I was a mean sister… but I try to make it up to her now.
I will always remember a time when I stormed into my bedroom after an argument with someone, my room was dark and the second I leapt into bed, the image of a girl appeared in front of me – she was young, fair hair and wearing a polka-dot dress. I shrugged it off at the time and it never happened again… but it was strange.

Did you have any monsters under your bed when you grew up?
Ha, that’s awesome! What a mischievous kid you were. So creepy about the little girl! I would freak out.
Totally freaky.
oh creepy! And yes! There were scary monsters under my bed. I became skilled at the run and jump move 😉
That’s a great skill to have early on.
I was sometimes the monster under my parents’ bed, but my monsters came from the walls.
That is a nice twist…
Seeing the girl must have been a strange experience. I know I’d panic!
Yeah, it was pretty weird.
I’m pretty sure I set record distances when leaping from the doorway (where the light switch was) to my bed. Haha! I still have nights where I prefer not to let my feet dangle off the bed.

Ha…. good to know I’m not the only one.
What an interesting experience. Have you looked more into it since?
Not really… I kind of let it be… figured if it happened more it would mean something.
Hahaha! Oh your teasing of your sister made me laugh!
🙂
My older sister did that to me but it was monsters outside in the cornfields. We laugh about it now but I was terrified then.
That would have been spooky out in the cornfields…I’m picturing all those horror movies I’ve seen in similar settings.
Maybe the girl was a ghost. At least the polka dot dress wasn’t too scary!
Maybe… thought I would have liked to see her again
I agree she could have been a ghost, only coming out under very specific circumstances. 🙂
I also used to get my little brother into tears with the stories I told and played out. Guess I was really convincing.
You must have told great ghost stories:)
Oh, you were a mean sister!
At least the woman was wearing polka dots. That’s not too threatening.
I know.. I do feel bad about it now.
I can’t wait to read this book! It’s everywhere (a constant reminder) buy me buy me :))
I’m sure you’ll like it:)
That is strange about the girl you saw. I don’t think I’d sleep very well after that!
I probably should have been scared too, but just wasn’t. If it happened now, I’d be petrified… goes to show how much more resilient kids are.
My monsters were the Hobiats and since they could steal my toys and eat my toes by coming up from under the bed, you betcha there were monster under my bed. 🙂 I love that you screamed there was a werewolf under the bed. Werewolves are my favorite monster of all.
They do sound pretty scary. I love werewolves too:) I guess I must have liked them when I was young too
Oooh, spooky! 😀
I lived in England where the spiders could get very large (for a kid). Those were scary enough for me. Usually my father got rid of them, but one night he and my mom were out and I found a huge spider in my room. I threw a doll blanket on it, thinking that would trap it until my parents got home. As if!
That hippo looks like my daughter’s stuffie. 🙂
Ohhh spiders still freak me out today… lucky hubby is in charge of getting rid of them whenever I spot one:)
Eeeeek! Scary polka-dot dress girl! I totally shivered just now! (For some reason, I’ve envisioned those creepy twin girls from The Shining, though I don’t think they work polka-dot dresses.)
Some Dark Romantic
I have no idea why she wore a polka-dot dress, but it’s always stuck with me.
Very strange vision . . . makes me wonder if a girl who used to live in that house died young? Anyways, I didnt need to look far for scary stuff around my childhood. A funny tidbit: my step-father legally changed his name to Michael Myers after that guy in the Halloween movies, who btw, haunts down a little girl named JAMIE in the film series. Yeah, we even had a very creepy answering machine message to go along with it with the theme song playing and my mom saying in the most creepy voice ever: “Michael Myers isn’t in. He may be anywhere.
We’re still looking for Jamie. Leave a message–I’m certain at least he’ll return.” Many prank calls throughout the year . . . even my hubby pranked called us in middle school before he even met me! LOL
That’s both creepy and cool… I bet your friends must have loved it when they called your place.
Ooohohooooo… A vision of a ghostly figure–yikes! I didn’t have monsters under the bed either, but I didn’t have a sister to freak out, which kinda diminishes the joy of being monster-free (*cackles madly*). Great post!
Funny thing is I wasn’t scared after seeing the image…
now that was creepy! Seeing the image of the girl like that! *Shudders* It did give me a story idea, however! 😀

Excellent…
I couldn’t help but giggle at you scaring your sister. I use to do the same with my brother. Unfortunately he was afraid of a lot more things than I was and he’d have terrible nightmares. Interesting that you saw the image of a young girl. I wonder what that meant.
I wonder the same thing…hmmm..
I used to think being an only child was the worst thing ever. I’ve reconsidered upon hearing that trick 🙂
Haha….
I also saw an image of a person once. It was a one or two second flash, but it was frightening.
This blogfest is conjuring all types of memories. I was scared of many things, usually stemming from sources of entertainment.
Cool to know I wasn’t the only one:)
Aw- your poor sister! My brother used to torture me with things that frightened me. It wasn’t really all that hard. I was afraid of EVERYTHING.
I still find it ironic that I love to write paranormal, sci-fi and fantasy, but grew up as a scared twit, of everything unusual. My imagination, always got the best of me.
It’s your imagination…. it wants to explore all those things you fear…
Kids with vivid imagination have a smaller chance to escape the fear of monsters…I remember being terrified to go to sleep because of my night terrors.
It sure is a scary thing to get over as a kid
I’ve never been a horror fan so I never watched them. Maybe that is why I don’t remember any scary monsters under my bed. Now I live with a horror flick fan. I still can’t stomach them, but each October I dedicate the whole month to horror films. It seems fitting for the month and I still get to choose the rest of the movies for the rest of the year.
Oct is a great month to dedicate to all things horror:)
The werewolf trick on your sister was mean – but funny as hell! Glad my brother never did stuff like that to me.
There are some advantages to be an older sibling:)
The “thing” under the bed still freaks me out sometimes. But anyone who’s lived in a house with a basement knows those places are definitely where the monsters live!!! O.o
Thank goodness I don’t have a basement… it would totally freak me out.
